Fiat G.55 "Centauro", Sottoserie 0, M.M.91058
confiscated by the German Luftwaffe
Autumn/Winter 1943

The Germans had a high esteem of the Italian fighter. The Luftwaffe acquired two airframes and equipped them with the high-performance DB 603 engine, resulting in the G.56 version. Probable projects of widespread use in the Axis came to a halt after the armistice.
Not being delivered to the Regia Aeronautica squadrons, this particular plane stayed with the Fiat/Aeritalia factories where it was used for test purposes for the production Serie I. Already in the FIAT works the Regia Aeronautica markings (fuselage band, Savoy cross) were overpainted with "Italian-style" Luftwaffe markings. After the foundation of the newly-formed Fascist Air Force of Mussolinis R.S.I. (Repubblica Socialista Italiana - Italian Socialist Republic), the planes were handed over to the squadrons of the ANR (Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana - National Republican Airforce) where thery were flown with German insignia during the training phase.
